Moving house checklist

A moving checklist split by time: what to book two months ahead, what to pack first and what to do on the day. Tick items as you go, delete what does not apply and add your own.

Changes are saved on this device as soon as you tick or edit.

Tips for your moving house checklist

When should you start planning a move?

The sooner the better for the things with waiting lists: movers, vans, school places and parking permits. That is why this list starts two months out. If your move is sooner, keep the order and squeeze the timeline: book first, sort second, pack third. Nothing on the list depends on the exact week, so moving items between sections is fine.

What should go in the first-night box?

What you will want before the other boxes are open: phone chargers, toiletries, a change of clothes, bedding, towels, toilet paper, a kettle or coffee maker, mugs, snacks, basic tools, light bulbs and any medicines you take. Travel with it in the car instead of the truck, so it arrives with you.

Who needs your new address?

Start with the ones that send money or bills: bank, employer, pension, insurers, loan and card providers, phone and subscriptions. Then the ones that keep records about you: doctor, dentist, vet, school, and the official registers of your country. Mail forwarding catches what you forget, but only for a while, so treat it as a safety net.

How do you label boxes so unpacking is fast?

Write the room on two sides and on the top, plus three or four words about what is inside. Number the boxes and keep the list in this checklist: add an item per box under "After the move" and tick it when the box is unpacked. Put "open first" on the boxes for the kitchen and the beds.

Questions about this checklist

Can the checklist work out the dates from my moving day?

Yes. Press Due dates and enter your moving day. Each section already carries a starting offset, such as 8 weeks before for "Two months before", and every item gets its date from your moving day. Change the day and all the dates move with it; change the offset of a section or of one item if your timeline is different. The dates can then go to your calendar as an .ics file.

Can I change the sections of the moving checklist?

Yes. Rename a section, delete it, or add a new one, for example "Storage unit" or "Old house cleaning". Every item can be edited with the pencil next to it.

Is my list saved if I close the page?

Yes, in the browser you used. Your lists are kept in that browser’s storage on your device and appear under "Saved on this device". They are not sent to us, so they will not show up on another phone or computer unless you open a share link there.

How do I share the list with the person I am moving with?

Press Share link and send the address. It carries the whole list, including what is ticked. The other person can edit their copy; changes do not sync back, so send a new link after big changes.

Does it work for moving abroad?

The structure works, but an international move adds visas, customs forms, shipping and registration in the new country. Add a section for those with the steps your destination’s official website lists.
