A checklist for the practical side of a new baby: leave and paperwork, getting the home ready, the bag for the birth and help for the first weeks. Medical questions belong with your midwife or doctor, so this list leaves them out.

It covers the jobs that are easy to forget when everything else is new: leave dates, registration, insurance, the nursery, the bag, meals in the freezer and who to call. It does not tell you how to care for a baby’s health, feeding or sleep. Those questions have answers that depend on the baby and on your health service, so ask your midwife, health visitor or doctor and add what they tell you to the list.
Ask your midwife or birth centre what they recommend and what they want you to bring; many parents pack it a few weeks before the due date so it is ready if the baby comes early. Keep the list here and tick items as they go in the bag.
Leave dates with your employer usually have a notice deadline, so they come first. Birth registration and adding the baby to insurance or a health service also have time limits that depend on where you live. Check the official website of your country or state for the exact rules and dates, and write them next to the item.
Press Share link and send it to whoever is helping. They get their own copy of the list with your edits. Split the sections between you, for example one person on paperwork and another on the nursery.
